SYNOPSIS LONG

Seltsame Bräuche herrschen in einem kleinen Dorf auf einer windgepeitschten Insel im Atlantik. Von Zeit zu Zeit holt der Junge im Pub ein schweres Paket ab und bringt es seiner Grossmutter. Zurück trägt er ein Schiffsmodell in einer leeren Flasche, das von den Männern im Pub mit einem dröhnenden Choral empfangen wird. Ein Boot legt ab.

Strange customs govern a little village on a windswept isle in the Atlanic. Every now and again, a boy collects a heavy package from the pub and brings it to his grandmother. He returns with a ship in a bottle. Boy and bottle are received by the men in the pub with an ominous chant. A boat raises anchor.

Dans un petit village, sur une île de la Mer du nord atlantique par les vents, la vie est régie par d’étranges coutumes. De temps en temps, un garçon rapporte du pub un lourd colis à la maison de sa grand-mère et revient avec un bateau miniature dans une bouteille.

BACKGROUND

After their cliff-hanging adventures in the towering

Swiss mountains, successful directors Claudius Gentinetta and Frank Braun have followed a call to the cliffs and crashing waves of an island set in the spectacular landscape of a country they both like to go to on their holidays. Nature’s unbending wildness provides the stage for a story about the woes of growing up, learning to say goodbye, and coming to terms with death.

SETTING

A scarcely inhabited, windswept island off Ireland’s wild west coast. Life here is pretty much deter-mined by the weather – it is a place where clouds chase the sun, delivering a natural spectacle of

light and shadow on the hills. The little shop in the village has long closed its doors, and the fishing fleet has shrunk to a single boat. In the evening, the remaining islanders meet in the pub as the last ferry to the mainland leaves the jetty

MUSIC

Seamus Fogarty, who grew up on the Irish coast, composed the soundtrack to Islander’s Rest.

His music echoes and amplifies the rugged, wild landscape and the deep melancholy of cold rainy days. Peter Bräker’s rich sound design, arranged in a rhythm of ever-present waves, creaking beams, howling winds and singing telephone

wires, draws us further into life on the island.

Then Christian Weber (double-bass) and Emma Smith (viola) add the melodies with their subtle play. They are joined by the many bass voices of the people in the pub, evoking an archaic chant that gets under your skin (sung by Seamus Fogarty and Ramon Orza). The catchy theme, on the other hand, is carried by the bright, warm soprano of a boy’s voice (sung by Maret Gentinetta) - it accom-panies us into the credits, when story and image have already come to an end.

The foggy dew is a folk metaphor for depression. In the case of this song, a couple had a secret relationship centred around one night, when the girl was distraught, so he rolled her into bed to 'keep off the foggy dew'.

Ye Vagabonds

Ye Vagabonds are brothers, Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn. They began playing music together on the streets of their hometown and forged a style based on close harmonies and acoustic instrumentation inspired by various folk traditions. Two years ago they moved to Dublin and quickly became familiar faces around the city’s folk and blues session scene.
